Plodding along.....

ABCD0010.JPGGreat, another bank holiday weekend on it's way, but as everyone know's it's hardly a time to rest because there's always lots of events on. Hopefully the sun will be shining, I'm a bit of a sun worshiper, in fact I think I should've been born a lizard as I'd love to just bask in the sun all day!! Speaking of lizards I'd like to tell you about Ziggy, he's my pet bearded dragon, every morning he likes to think he's Houdini & escapes out of his tank, he then does a commando crawl along the edge, dangles by his back legs to lower himself onto the table, then leaps onto the floor, legs it over to the couch, crawls up the side & plonks himself on the cushion on the windowsill beside Rodney, my son's Jack Russell, where I leave him to spend the day watching the world go by, whilst I go either to work or to ride the horses & take Rodney & Lupa, my Belgian Shepherd, to play on mum & dad's farm all day.

After my trip to Vale View I haven't been to anymore Para competitions yet, I've been working on my position & doing local competitions to get used to the whole competitive thing again, but I have to admit I haven't lost my competitive streak. I've been riding since I can remember & my dad has to be one of the most competitive people in the world, so it kind of rubbed off on me & my sisters Lauren & Kate. Showjumping was his thing & he was really good in his day! He stands on the sideline with the video camera now & you can hear him when you watch it back effing & blinding about what you're doing wrong, & calling the horse all the names under the sun if they aren't behaving. I think I've managed to get him interested in dressage though, we went down to Addington when we were away in Feb, and he really enjoyed it.

This weekend I'm taking George to a sponsored event for charity, it's been organised by Manx Telecom, where I work. We have to go from our HQ to one of the telephone exchanges on the island by walking, jogging, cycling, sailing etc, I've obviously chose to ride as I wouldn't get far on my legs. I'm going to fill my hip flask & ride about 8 miles to our destination, then hopefully we'll be greeted with bacon butties, then on Monday I'm taking Bernie in the IOM Dressage group competition, hopefully I'll do better than my last few times, but you know what it's like when you get to a comp, there's so much more interesting things for Bernie to think about than me!!!

My first Para competition

I was in a hurry to get graded, so that I could do my first para competition. At first I was just going to go & watch with my trainer Angela (Kennedy) but I thought, what the heck, I have to start somewhere & decided to give it a go. It was a BD para dressage talent spotting competition & it was held at Vale View. I had to go away on the Wednesday so that we could drive down & I could have a couple of lessons on the horse I was going to ride. I'd been told he was a big grey ex advanced eventer called George, at least I'd be able to remember his name. I was really excited to meet him & to ride him as he'd obviously know his stuff, & he didn't dissapoint, he was gorgeous, & lovely to ride. I did consider taking him home, but he wouldn't fit into the back of the car!

The competition was held over two days. I was in the over 25's group on the Saturday, & the under 25's, & the kids classes were held on the Sunday. I wasn't on til late afternoon so I watched the others do their bit, which made me even more nervous as they were really good. To take my mind off things, I thought maybe a bit of retail therapy would help, so I went to the tack shop where a gorgeous pair of shiny boots were sitting looking at me, I just had to try them on.

BootsThey fitted perfectly, & with my long skinny stork legs, that was pretty amazing. Other than getting a custom made pair, I wouldn't have found a better fit - plus they were half price - so it would've be rude not to, eh?? So with not much persuasion, from my sister & friend's Bev & Julie, who had come to support me, they were mine, I wouldn't have let them take them off my feet anyway! I'd like to thank Arnie's joggers for buying them for me, it was very kind of them.     I found out later, that one of the judges had been eyeing them up, & was going to buy them in the afternoon, but they'd gone.............oops!

Eventually it came to my time, & with my new boots, I entered the arena. I did the best I could, & took all the advice from the judge when we did our training session. George was amazing we had to do medium trot & only had half an arena to play with, it's a good job he knows what he's doing! I came 7th in my class, which wasn't a bad effort. I was told I needed to strengthen my trunk muscles, so that I'm more stable. I'm doing this by riding on the lunge, with & without stirrups, which I feel is helping. I will have abs to die for soon & thighs of steel!

Getting Started

What gorgeous weather we had over Easter, it was so nice to be able to get some sun on my bones and let George out without his rug for a few hours, I hope it's going to be a hot summer & not a wet miserable one like last year.

I'd like to tell you about my trip to Kendal to be graded. To be able to compete in para dressage you have to be graded, this determines your disability to make competing fair, so that you are riding against people with similar disabilities. From reading the booklets about the grades I thought I'd be a grade III or IV (Ia & Ib being most disabled & IV being least). The physio does various tests on strength & balance & at the end of the session she thought I'd probably be a grade II, which I found quite surprising. It's taken me this long to come to terms with actually being able to admit I have a disability, so being told I'd probably be on the more disabled end of the scale was quite a shock. It isn't decided there & then though, the physio has to send her sheets off to the dressage secretary for it to be agreed upon, this has all been done & I am officially a Grade II. I had to go to Kendal for this to be done as there is no-one on the Isle of Man who can grade. I went with my Dad & we stayed with some friends. We were only meant to stay for one night, because it was a windy weekend we ended up staying for a couple of extra nights as our ferry home was cancelled. I was quite glad really because I'm a rubbish sailor & I probably would've been sick. It was still pretty rough when we did manage to get on the boat to come home, & with my already wobbly walk, it's a lot more difficult to get around a rocking boat, all though quite funny for the other passengers! I was hoping maybe a rocking boat would counteract my wobblyness, but unfortunately it doesn't. I just look really drunk......hmmmm, now there's a thought!!!

All about me

Hello, let me introduce myself, my name is Rowan, 9yrs ago I broke my neck in a car accident. I was told I would never walk again but the thing I was most concerned about was never riding my horses again.

Rowan Caley

Being a stubborn so & so I wasn't going to give up and after a while in Southport hospital & showing the doctors they were wrong I managed to get back on my feet & a few months later back on a horse. The accident has left me with nerve damage as I damaged my Spinal cord, so I have weakesses down my right hand side, I've earned myself a good list of nicknames, Stumbalina & Peg leg being just a couple.

Until now I have just been hacking around the roads, but I missed the competitive side of things, before my accident my main horsey discipline was show-jumping, and being rather proud I didn't want to get back into this as it was frustrating because I wasn't as good as I was "before".

Anyway to get to the point after watching the para olympics this year my mum suggested para dressage to me, I never enjoyed dressage, I think because I didn't understand it, but I agreed with her as this would be a great way to get back into competing again & I started taking lessons with a local dressage coach. After the first lesson I was hooked & now I am determined to give it all I've got. I have my own horse George who is recovering from a stifle injury & I ride my friends 7yr old coloured cob type called Bernie & I'm bringing him on & competing him in local dressage competitions which is really hard work. As I live on the Isle of Man it's going to be difficult to get to Para dressage competitions & I'm going to have to beg steal & borrow horses as it is far too costly to take mine away & I don't think he's quite up to the challenge yet, but it'll be great to have the experience of riding lots of different horses, so I'm going to keep you up to date with my progress & let you know what I've been getting up to & how I'm getting on.
