Things have been a little stop start recently with the weather remaining cold, but I have been able to keep Grace ticking over enough to take her out competing last weekend. We were booked in to do the Preliminary 19 (the test for the Regionals) and Novice 37 in the Training section. The plan was just to get her out in a different arena as she has not competed since October 2009 and she is a horse who needs to go out and see things as often as possible.
Grace warmed up surprisingly well. She was swinging and loose which was a great improvement to the last times she has been out, however, as we got into the arena she froze and developed judge phobia. I had to work really hard to get her past the judge's box and even harder to get her past the cafe so it was not surprising that as we got half way up the centre line she backed right off the leg and refused to go near them!
With some gentle coaxing, we managed to get around the test without too many incidents. I was quietly pleased with her because even though she had been a huge diva, the good bits had been really good and not once did she set against my leg and kick out. This was a big breakthrough for her. Also, I remained very calm and positive too, which was another major breakthrough!
She came out on 65.45% and 4th place which was better than I had hoped for in her first outing. I decided to do the Novice just to get some ring practise for her, but rather than being less spooky as she had already been in, she was actually ten times worse. Again, the good bits were good but the spooking was horrendous and she ended up on 59%.
Not one to be deterred, I took her back to Aintree yesterday to do the Novice 38. There was no pressure at all; this was just a chance to get her back out again. She warmed up even better than she had at the weekend, but as expected as she got into the arena she just turned into a plunging tense diva who was scared by everything. However, I kept the connection and the test had some really nice bits in it. I was so pleased with how she reacted to my leg I was really not too concerned about the result. Imagine my surprise when I discovered she had achieved 66.45% and won the Restricted class!
Due to the weather and some personal issues, I have transferred my Regionals entry to Willerby Hill in Yorkshire. Grace and I will be travelling up on Monday 22nd February ready to compete on Tuesday 23rd February. If she works as nicely as she has been these last two competitions, regardless of the final result I will be really pleased with her as it is a far cry from the horse I last competed in October 2009!
I know what you mean about the diva in the arena bit. My horse was great on Saturday - til we got into the arena and then it all went wrong!

However, the whole time the parrot drove him nuts with his incessant cursing, yelling and name-calling. Finally the repairman couldn’t contain himself any longer and yelled, “Shut up, you stupid ugly bird!” To which the parrot replied, “Get him, Spike!”

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
