Someone remind me to sack the SatNav lady!
We set off for Richmond EC bright and early, but from half way down the M62 Mrs SatNav tried to get me off the motorway at every single opportunity. She wanted to take me through the narrow windy roads over the moors (yes, we have been this way before and I almost had a nervous breakdown) but she was saying we would not arrive until 11am. You can imagine my panic as our first test was 11.22am.
Thankfully, I followed my instinct and once we were half way down the A1 Mrs SatNav decided to listen to me and dropped the time down to 10.33am. Oh, the relief!
When we are competing, Grace can come out feeling a bit tense and hot under the saddle, so in a lesson with Jo Wright-Graham this week we worked on getting her to stretch over her back and truly let go. As a result, when I applied the aids in the warm up, she just dropped and softened through her whole body offering me an unfamiliar feeling of complete relaxation.
I picked her up 15 minutes before we were due to go in for the first test as I did not want her to feel flat like she did last weekend. Usually, as I pick her up she tenses a little and it takes me a good five minutes to get her through again. However, because she was so very loose she just came up in the shoulder and waited for the next instruction.
The non qualifier went really well. I made a few mistakes as I let her run through the right canter transition which left me struggling to get it back, but it was the easiest test I have ever ridden her through. I came out feeling as though she had truly tried for me.
As we only had 45 minutes before the qualifier, I took her back into the warm up, dropped her low again and did lots more loosening work. She seemed to really respond to this way of riding and felt ready for whatever I asked of her. Again, I only picked her up 15 minutes before the test, gave her a few reminders to keep her in front of my leg and went into the arena feeling as though we were a real team.
Our two main errors were that she trotted early from the first canter (my husband was reading and said the word trot so her ear flicked towards him and she trotted) and she was crooked when she halted, but the test itself was fluid and felt simply beautiful to ride. I could not stop smiling, she had been incredible.
As we had a long journey home, I got a delicious cheese and ham toastie before checking the results. I could see that Grace had been placed second in both tests, but he tiny feeling of disappointment at not qualifying was soon eclipsed when I read we had 70.41% in both tests. I almost dropped my toastie into my cup of tea. This time last year she was not even back in work and now we had achieved a personal best. To complete the euphoric experience, I got my first nine for her free walk on a long rein!
So, onto next week in a last ditch attempt at qualifying for the Summer Regionals, but if we do not manage to get another first, I will be going into the Winter qualifiers feeling confident and optimistic in our ability as a partnership.
hi. Your horse looks really good in the pics. I looked you up on bd cos you were at frys when i was there, with all the high scores you have been getting recently are you sure your not out of prelim points now? Are you gonna try and qual novice instead?
Thank you... she is starting to look such a different horse to the one I have pictures of last year.
All my scores are in Preliminary, so we do not gain points at Prelim. She does have some Novice points, but in the current BD system you can gain 49 points at Novice before you are no longer eligible for Preliminary (I get so confused because they seem to change every year!).
Up until this week, I have not felt she was ready for Novice. We have done one or two since she came back into work following the surgeries, but she has just felt so weak through the medium work that I stopped doing them pretty sharpish. I had all these plans to be doing Novice tests when we came back into competing, but I seriously underestimated how the surgeries had effected her both mentally and physically. With hindsight, I should not have tried to take her out at Novice so soon, but that is something I have learned through my experience.
After gently trying some medium trot and canter work with her on Saturday at Richmond, I do now feel as though she is ready to go out and try some Novices again. I think I will do the first few HC to see how she gets on, but I am hoping to get her to the Area Festivals at Novice this summer :-)
How did you get on at Fry's? I think it is such a stunning venue, one of the most relaxed ones I have ever been to!

Virtually all that is on my mind is smoking cigarettes. I know i don't plan to take a hit and if anybody offered me a hit this minute, I'd not take it.
