October 2009 Archives

Well the commercial cattle championships have just taken place and the overall supreme trophy has gone to Black Beauty, a Netherwood Umpire sired heifer, from Tecwyn Jones of Llanrwst, Conwy.

This June 2008-born heifer was champion at Beef Expo earlier this year and was bought privately from breeder - Trefor Jones of Llanllyfni, Caernarfon.

Keeping it in the family the reserve title went to Tecwyn's cousin - Gerwyn Jones also of Llanrwst. This heifer being shown for the first time, was bred by Andrew Davies of Carmarthen and bought privately by Mr Jones who also has 30 Welsh Black cows. The heifer, Miss Unique, will next travel to the Scottish Winter Fair and AgriLive.

In the steer section the title went to a British Blue cross Limousin, Sooty, from Graham Jones of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, and bought out by his son - Matthew. Sooty was bought from the English Winter Fairy last year for £1,100 from breeder - Frank Page.

Reserve steer was King King - a Limousin cross from Elfed Williams, of Brecon, Powys. This one was bred by Andrew Powell of Knighton, Powys, and bought privately. Born in July 2008 it's sired by Glanmehilli Thumperr, which also bred the reserve supreme winner at Smithfield in 2005.

A full report will follow on Monday and look out for the report and pictures in next Friday's edition.

It's been a cracking day here at Agri Expo, with excellent stock, busy trade stands and plenty of visitors. Once again the H and H team should be very proud of the day, which truly is the region's premier one-day primestock show.

It's been a busy few hours here at Agri Expo....

The sheep championship has gone to a pair of Beltex lambs from Andrew and Becky Bishop of Eldersfield, Gloucester. The same pair won Countryside Live last week.

In reserve was a pair of Beltex crosses from Hannah Brown of Bedale, Yorkshire. This pair won the Young Farmers class before taking the reserve overall title in a strong line-up, which took some splitting by judge Granville Colegrave of Inchture, Perthshire.

For the first time this year there was a class for Mules. A huge crowd watched this strong class with judge, John Barker of Moffat, Dumfriesshire, commenting they were some of the best Mules he'd seen. The first prize went to Ron and Fran Wilson of Armatwhaite, Cumbria. The keener of you will have noticed they were feature in the Farmers Guardin the preview for Agri Expo. Back then their stock looked excellent in the field and they were turned out to perfection.

Elsewhere in the other bredd classes the Aberdeen-Angus championship went to John Elliot, Kelso, Roxburgshire, with Elliot Dam Buster, an April 2008-born bull by Rawburn Lord Ross.

The Hereford female title went Romany 1 Lucy from J.R.B. Wilson and Sons. This September 2009-born heifer is by Baybridge 1 Captain and out of Romany 1 Lucy A49, which was bought from Canada as an embryo.

Follwoing the show the heifer was bought for export to Eire. It sold at £5,000 to Goulding Herefords from Co Kerry.

The male champion was Panmure 1 Fred from J.M. Cant and Partners of Angus, Tayside. This Solpoll 1 son is part of the Cant's 13-strong herd.

Lastly the British Blue title went to Jonatahn Bellas of Appleby, Cumbria, with Croftends Emma, which was being shown for the first time.

The commercial cattle judging is drawing to a close and a charity auction will take place before the final awards are announced.

It's busy already here at Agri Expo and some of the day's main judging is underway. The national suckled calf and primestock show has started with Donald Macpherson from Berwick on Tweed, Northumberland, officating as the judge. From what I've seen of the judging so far there look to be some excellent quality stock on show, with large classes in every section.

The Aberdeen-Angus calf show has just started and the prime sheep and British Blue and Hereford Calf show will soon be in full swing.

It's a busy programme of events here today culminating in the supreme cattle championship at 4pm but I'll do my best to keep you up-to-date with the results.
