THE reserve champion at the Dalesbred sheep breeders' association show and sale of in-lamb females at Bentham mart sold for £900.

The title winner was a mature ewe from Michael Carr, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Settle, and sold to Richard Close, Upper Wharfedale.

Mr Close was also exhibiting and took the overall championship with a shearling gimmer, which went on to sell for £650 to M. Thorpe, West Burton.

ANOTHER good entry of excellent dairy cattle saw heifers average over £2,000 and cows over £1,600 at Carmarthen mart this week.

A consignment of nine heifers from Richard and Bethan Thomas' Churchvale herd, Llancwm, averaged £2,063, and included the top price of the day at £3,600.

Earning the top call was Churchvale Sam Starmaiden, a heifer by Regancrest M Drham Sam and out of Tremenyn Aero Promo Starmaiden, which gave 8,379kg in her third lactation. With four generations of VG and EX cows behind her she calved at the beginning of the year and sold giving 30kg of milk. She joined the Rhydygors herd, Talog.

Another heifer to make over £3,000 was Lyganlan Erica 96, which realised £3,050. This Comestar Stormatic daughter is out of two generations of EX Ericas. The hammer fell toy E. Rees, Whitland.

Churchvale kept the trade up with £2,420 for a home-bred heifer - Churchvale Jackson Rosina - selling to Messrs Rees, RHos, Efailwen. This December calver sold giving 28kg and was a Weeton Jackson daughter.

Also making a telling contribution to the trade was the Gest herd from R. Maskell and Partners, with two heifers, Gest Fanella 298 and Gest Dewdrop159 selling at £2,250 and £2,200.

Averages: 2 dairy cows, £1,755; 8 dairy heifers, £1,520; 9 recorded cows, £1,615; 21 recorded heifers, £2,013; 1 in-calf heifer, £800; 3 bulling heifers, £797.

The draft sale from a 600 strong commercial herd in Sussex, was held at the Sedgemoor Auction Centre on Tuesday.

The offering was selected due to a change in farming policy as the traditional Friesian type of cows, as well as cross-breeds that were better suited to a grazing system of management, rather than a TMR, were sold off.

The top price was 1,600gns for a June calver milking in her fourth lactation. Buyers were Messrs Grove Partners, Oldbury-On-Severn, who also claimed another June calver to the Belgian Blue, carrying her fourth calf at 1,460gns. Gordon Davis, Tiverton was in good form, buying young cows well in-calf and purchased an April calving 2nd calver incalf to the Belgian Blue at 1,400gns.

All of the cows were sold as seen without any milk records, but this did not prevent a packed ringside chasing cows that were mostly due from April to August to Black and White, Aberdeen Angus and Belgian Blue service sires.

The sale was enhanced by the inclusion of 28 Friesian type in-calf heifers from Coombe Lodge Estate. All in-calf to Aberdeen Angus they sold to a cracking trade to eight different purchasers topping at 1,610gns and averaging £1,416. The top priced in-calf heifer was 1,630gns for an entry consigned by R.J. and J. .Tulley, Brixham, Devon.

Bidding peaked at 5,600gns at this month's Lancaster dairy sale.

Leading the trade was the October 2007-born Cramar L Missy Misty consigned by Roger and Dianne Steeples and Sam Wake, Kettering, Northamptonshire.

The hammer fell to James Tomlinson for the Bilsrow herd, Preston.

Misty had been the champion calf at the central counties calf show last year and was following in a family tradition as her dam the EX93 Bromstead Jed Missy was also in the sale and took the championship before selling at 3,800gns to Crystalclear Holsteins, Northampton.

The first prize heifer was Dunnerdale FBI Pretzel, from W.W. and D. Boow, Bootle, Cumbria. This Gillette Brilea daughter calved in January and sold at 3,100gns to A. and B. Bargh, Skelton, Penrith.

A further three animals made 3,000gns, emphasising the current demand for quality cattle.

The sale also included a major reduction from David and Sara Berry's Boggart herd, Barton, Preston, and these sold to 2,300gns for a second calver by Startmore Rudolph.

Averages: 15 females, £2,828; 39 Boggart cows and calved heifers, £1,348.85.

Auctioneers: Norton and Brooksbank with North West Auctions.

A packed ringside of bidders saw prices rise to £6,800 at the sale of show potential cattle at Ruthin mart on Saturday.

Just under 100 lots passed through the ring with very few making anything less than £700.

Topping the trade was a smart August 2008-born British Blue cross heifer from Trefor Jones, Llanllynfni.

The heifer was by Mr Jones' stock bull - Netherwood Umpire and was out of a pedigree Limousin cow - one of 35 Mr Jones runs in his Trefid herd. The heifer was earlier tapped forward by show judge, Tudor Edwards, as the heifer and overall reserve show champion.

It was steer from Allen and Janet Powell, Ceredigion, that took the overall championship title. The steer - a Limousin - was born in June 2008 and is by a home-bred bull. It later sold at £5,900.

Bidding has finished and on the final day of trading at the last ever bull sale at Perth Charolais bulls peaked at 55,000gns, an all-breeds record average of £6,062 was realised, and the sale grossed £1.15 million.

Earning the top call was Sportsmans Columbo from Charlie Boden's 60 cow Sportsmans herd at Stockport, Cheshire. Columbo, born in July 2007, is by the 55,000gns Thrunton Voldermort and his dam, Sportsmans Regal, is by the 26,000gns Ugie Legend.
